Are you in need of a reset with your diet? I totally am! I’ve let myself splurge this holiday season, and while I’ve definitely enjoyed it, I’m ready to get back to clean eating. On January 2, I’ll be kicking off my third round of Whole30 and am really excited about it!
In case you’re not familiar with Whole30, it’s a 30-day clean-eating plan designed to clean up your eating habits by cutting out foods that might be having a negative impact on your health and causing stress on your digestive system – specifically dairy, sugar, grains, legumes, and alcohol. I did Whole30 the first time in Spring of 2017 after I saw a wholistic nutritionist for my infertility issues. You can read more about that experience here and here. My nutritionist did not tell me to follow the Whole30 program, but based on the assessment she did and her recommendations of what I needed to be eating and avoiding, it pretty much aligned with the Whole30 program so I decided to follow the rules and recipes. This played a huge role in my ability to conceive naturally without medication so I am a firm believer in the program and the rewarding results.
I did the Whole30 program again this past June to kick the intense sugar cravings that surfaced after I had a baby, and this time, my goal is simple. I want to start the year off on a strong note when it comes to my health and wellness. I eat Whole30 about 80% of the time already, but I always have so many wonderful improvements (better digestion, sleep, more energy, clearer skin) when I follow the program completely. I’m also making consistent exercise a priority this time around (something I wasn’t doing last time). I’ll be doing it with my friend, Meg Hall, (if you’re not following her on Insta, you should be – she is one of the most genuine, funny and kind people on the internet), and any of you that would like to join us! On her blog today is a great WHOLE30 PREP post that includes 5 things I recommend doing before you get started + a sample menu for the first week. We’ll both be documenting our journeys and I’ll do my best to share new recipes and menu suggestions for each week.
If you’ve been thinking about doing Whole30, but are intimated, DON’T BE! There is no such thing as the perfect Whole30 so just do your best and give yourself some grace. Little by little progress adds up and even if you don’t do it all perfectly, I guarantee it will change the way you think about food and your eating habits. It may sound cheesy, but it really does have the potential to change the way you eat for the rest of your life!
If you’re interested in doing the Whole30 or have questions, I’m happy to answer in the comments. You can TOTALLY do this and I’ll be here cheering you on!
*A note for breastfeeding mamas that might be worried about milk supply. This will be my second time on the program while breastfeeding and I had zero issues the last time. The key is to enough food, healthy fats and drink lots of water. 🙂
