Each year in late spring or early summer I take the time to refresh the large planters on either side of our front door. With this area of the house being the first thing guests see when they arrive and what greets us when we come home after a long day, it’s important to me that it’s inviting. I’ve had a lot of questions about which plants are able to survive the southern heat, so I thought I’d give you some more details about exactly how I build my planters!
The key is knowing what kind of environment you have and matching it to plants that will thrive with that specific amount of sunlight, water, heat, etc. My porch is covered so my planters are consistently in indirect sunlight and I am able to water them every day during the summer. After some research, I chose a mix of plants that can do well in sun and partial shade and prefer water every day. I currently have Macho Ferns, yellow Petunias, Vinca Vine, pink Hydrangeas, Caladium, and Spanish Moss planted. This formula is my favorite yet, giving fresh life and color to our front porch!
