My goal in designing our house has always been to create an elegant space that honors the character of our southern home. The result? An inviting blend of sophistication and warmth. Achieving this balance might seem effortless to some, but here’s a little secret: it takes careful time and planning to curate such a specific feeling. If you’re going for a similarly refined look, I’ve put together my top five tips that guided me throughout the design journey. I’d love to hear about any design secrets you swear by too!
Wallpaper
Wallpaper, wallpaper, and more wallpaper! In my opinion, you can never have enough. Wallpaper brings so much joy and character to every space that I’ve used it in almost every room. This may be my number one tip for creating a specific feeling in a room.
Mixing Patterns
Don’t be afraid to mix patterns here and there. Combining different patterns can add depth and personality to your space, creating a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere.
Brass Lighting
Like many, I firmly believe that overhead lighting should be used sparingly. The warmth provided by lamps, sconces, and display lighting is so important in designing a welcoming space. Brass light fixtures, especially, have such an elegant feel. My go-to for all things lighting is Pooky Lighting. In our family room we have the Albafloss Chandelier with Green Stripe Shades, Double Arm Pitcheroo and Smaller Pitcheroo above the bookshelf, and the Walter Cordless Lamp nestled in between stacks of books. With hundreds of shade fabrics and such a variety of lighting styles, Pooky has something to suit every taste.
Lots of Color
Color is your friend. In recent years, mainstream interior design trends have often steered away from vibrant colors. While everyone’s style is different, I find that color, when used thoughtfully, can bring any space to life with warmth and personality. Our custom built-ins seen here are Parma Gray by Farrow & Ball.
Pretty Books and Art
Over the years, I’ve gathered a collection of beautiful books, art pieces, and vases to display throughout our home. I enjoy layering antique and contemporary pieces on our bookshelves, coffee tables, nightstands, and more. These items add significant character to a room, especially when they hold personal meaning or a unique story.
