There’s always that in-between stretch when summer planters are starting to look a little tired, but it’s still too early to fully embrace fall planting. Rather than starting over with anything that feels distinctly autumnal, I refreshed our porch planters with a classic mix that still feels right for summer but will carry beautifully into fall.

What I Planted
Kimberly Queen Fern
I started with a Kimberly Queen fern in the back for height, fullness and that classic porch look.
White Caladium
The oversized leaves add beautiful contrast and make the planter feel layered without introducing another color.
Diamond Snow Euphorbia
Its tiny white flowers add a delicate, airy texture between the larger leaves.
White Vinca
A few simple white blooms brighten all of the greenery while holding up beautifully during the warmer weeks.
English Ivy
I finished with English ivy around the edges for trailing greenery that softens the planter and spills naturally over the sides.

An Easy Planter Formula
If you can’t find these exact varieties at your garden center, use the same basic formula:
height + statement foliage + delicate texture + flowers + something trailing
It’s an easy way to create that full, collected look while still making the combination your own.

How Often to Water
Rather than following a strict watering schedule, I water deeply when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry. During the hottest weeks, that can mean every few days, while cooler or shadier conditions may require less.
The result is an easy, classic refresh for that tricky little stretch between summer and fall, and a combination you can take straight to the garden center when your summer planters are ready for something new.
