I’ve been following Kelly LeVeque‘s #Fab4Smoothie method for nearly two years and it remains my favorite way to enjoy a nourishing breakfast!
Here’s a quick breakdown of what a #Fab4Smoothie entails:
- PROTEIN: 1 serving or 20 g of protein – I like this one or this one for a plant-based option
- FAT: 1 tbsp. minimum per serving – sunflower butter (my go-to since I have a nut allergy), almond butter, coconut oil, avocado, MCT Oil, pumpkin seeds
- FIBER: 1-2 tbsp or 10 g of fiber – chia seeds, flax, hemp hearts or acacia fiber.
- GREENS: handful kale, spinach, zucchini, cauliflower, cucumber, parsley, cilantro etc.
The Fab Four formula limits fruit and instead helps you fill up on protein, fat, fiber and greens which naturally help to elongate and balance your blood sugar curve – super important for us gals with PCOS (aka pre-diabetes). Not only are these smoothies quick to make, but they are an easy way to get in a ton of veggies first thing in the morning and they will actually keep you full until lunch.
I love so many of Kelly’s smoothie recipes from her two books, Body Love and Body Love Every Day, but she’s also inspired me to come up with my own combos like my Chocolate Zucchini Bread. This is probably the one I make the most!
I know adding zucchini to your smoothie might seem crazy, but I promise you can’t taste it! It also gives the smoothie a wonderful creamy texture similar to that of frozen bananas – but without all the sugar. This is a satiating smoothie that both your taste buds and gut will love. 🙂
Before you make your smoothie, you’ll want to prep your zucchini by chopping, steaming (much easier on digestion than raw) and freezing it. I love using my Stasher bags for this (these are non-toxic reusable bags and they’re amazing!). Wash and slice your zucchini then place in Stasher bag. To steam, you can either put the Stasher bag in a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes, or in the microwave for 2-3. Drain the excess water out of the Stasher bag, allow to cool then place in the freezer, making sure the zucchini are side-by-side and aren’t on top of each other. The Stasher bag makes the prep so much easier + it protect your food from nasty freezer burn and helps to seal in freshness.

- 1 medium organic zucchini - sliced, steamed and frozen
- 1-2 tbsp sunbutter
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp ground organic flax seed
- 1 serving chocolate protein powder
- 1 cup unsweetened almond or coconut milk (optional, I typically use water but if you want it creamier use a nut or seed milk)
- Wash the zucchini and slice into ¼ inch thick rounds, steam it until tender (easier to digest than raw zucchini), allow to cool before freezing. (I usually do this at the beginning of the week so I have it on hand and ready to use throughout the week)
- Add all the ingredients to a high-powered blender and process until smooth. Add additional water or milk to thin the mixture out until desired consistency reached.
